Happy New Year to everyone! Tiffany and I have been having a wonderful time here in Dusseldorf.
On the 30th, we went into town (we are getting awesome at the super short train stop) and discovered that everything is closed on the 30th. All stores and shops were empty, dark, and locked up. What had been an incredibly busy street the day before was all but deserted on Sunday. Luckily, we did find a couple of open museums. We toured the Dusseldorf Film Museum which was actually really cool! They had tons of old cameras and film strips and flip books and the evolution of modern film making and a replica studio set that we could look around. Tiff and I spent a lot of time in there. We were also happy to discover that a lot of the exhibits had explanations in English so we weren't just guessing about what the different things meant.
We also walked down to Rheinturn Tower. We didn't go up in it because the line was super long, but we got to see it up close and personal.
We had a very interesting experience whenever we tried to get dinner. We found a place that served Jagerschnitzel (mmmmmmmmmm) but it was crowded and we weren't sure if we were supposed to seat ourselves or not. When we tried to ask, the server didn't speak English and kept pointing us toward the bar. After a while, someone came to get us. She was really nice and we tipped her well to show our gratitude.
Then we caught the train home and downloaded Emma (the BBC version) and watching it in our hotel.

New Years' Eve was fun as well. We slept a little late and enjoyed a relaxing morning before gearing up for the Dusseldorf New Years' Party. We were going to go down by the river and watch the fireworks.
We went down and took a ride on the giant ferris wheel Tiffany has named the "German Eye." It gave us a beautiful view of the city even if I had a minor freak out whenever we stopped at the top. :) I'm just glad they weren't shooting the fireworks off by the wheel then like they were later!
We had dinner in a tiny restaurant and had more fun trying to communicate with a staff who only spoke a little English. We walked around the the old town area a couple of times trying to kill time before the party started. Some Germans (who had clearly already been drinking) came up and started talking to us. Their English was actually pretty good. When they found out we were from Texas they asked if we all had guns. It was quite funny actually.
About 8:15, we realized that hanging out in downtown Dusseldorf for four more hours surrounded by people who were becoming steadily more drunk as the evening went on just to see a few fireworks wouldn't be worth it so we packed up and headed back to the hotel.
The thing about Germany though is that it's not illegal to shoot off fireworks inside city limits. So, we'd been hearing fireworks shoot off occasionally all evening but when the clock hit midnight, the city around us exploded! We looked outside the window and everywhere you looked there were fireworks! They were on the street below us and all over the city and filled up the horizon. It was so cool!!! Tiff and I stood at our window for 30 minutes at least watching them all! It was really neat! We ended up being really glad that we came home early!
